Ask Dr. Tseday: December 14, 2008
BS from Pasadena, CA asks: Our 18-year-old daughter is giving us lots of problems in the house. She doesn’t listen, she argues, she throws things around, she comes in late, she lies, etc. She’s always fighting with us. How do we get her to obey us?
Dr. Tseday responds: Why is your college-bound 18-year-old daughter still living in the house? Your responsibility as parents is to guide her so that she becomes a responsible adult. Keeping her in the home and interacting with her as if she’s still a child haults the growing process. Help her mature by finding her a place of her own and treating her like an adult through your interaction and expectation.
